2005 SEPG Conference 1/2 Day Tutorial

How to Rapidly Define the Organization's Standard Set of Processes

Keywords: Process Definition, Process Modeling, Process Documentation

Topic: CMMI PA specific

Target Audience: Intermediate

Abstract:

Although existing process modeling techniques have been effective in defining and improving processes, the process improvement industry needs new techniques to make change happen more rapidly. SEI data shows that it takes organizations longer to achieve increased levels of maturity than it did in the past.

This tutorial will describe in detail how to accurately model projects' development processes in several days, rather than the weeks such activities take using other methods. The resulting process models can then be used immediately to:

  1. Perform a practical gap analysis (equivalent to a CMMI Class C appraisal)
  2. Prioritize practices for improvement
  3. Model improved practices
  4. Begin establishing the organizations standard set of processes

The presenters will show how to use this approach:

  1. In multi-site/international organizations
  2. To link and prioritize modeling and improvement efforts with performance goals
  3. To reduce the time development staff requires to learn and apply process improvement concepts
  4. To also implement CMMI level 2 PAs in one year

The presenters will lead participants through a series of focused hands-on exercises to construct and improve a process model. They will also describe specific real-world experiences and the resulting process models developed to rapidly implement CMMI.
